Every directory died the same way. Here is how this one doesn't.

The exhaustive directories sold placement, and their readers could tell. Trust, once spent, doesn't restock. This charter is the standing contract between elems and everyone who reads it — published before the first vendor dollar, so it can never be bent to fit one.

1 · Elements are chosen editorially

What earns a seat on the table — and which two to four tools hold each element every quarter — is an editorial judgment made against visible criteria: does the job exist, is it durable, do real AI-led companies staff it. No commercial relationship of any kind influences that judgment.

2 · Rankings are never for sale

There is no price at which a tool can be added to an element, promoted within one, or protected from removal. There never will be. If a tool loses its seat, the changelog records the succession and the reason — including when the departing tool was a paying vendor of anything else.

3 · What money can buy, precisely

Vendors may eventually pay for exactly two things: depth (a verified profile with structured facts they maintain — pricing, integrations, model support) and measurement (a report on how accurately AI engines describe them against the table). Money buys accuracy and telemetry. It cannot buy presence, position, or protection.

4 · Affiliate links are disclosed and quarantined

Where a recommended tool has a referral program, links may carry it — always disclosed on the page, and never in either direction a factor in which tools are recommended. The verdicts are written first; the links are decorated after. Mechanically: every outbound link on this site resolves through one configuration file, referral links are marked ° and carry rel="sponsored", and the page they sit on states it plainly. Rankings are computed from the evidence before that file is ever consulted. If a program's terms would ever tempt a re-ranking, we decline the program — the ranking is the asset.

5 · Every claim is dated

Every page carries its edition and verification date. A recommendation without a date is a rumor; this site doesn't publish rumors.

6 · Corrections are public

When we get something wrong, the correction lands in the changelog, not down a memory hole.

7 · The data stays open

The complete dataset — every element, tool, take, and seat — is published at elems.ai/data under CC BY 4.0. Anyone can verify what changed between editions, because every edition is archived. An open ledger is the cheapest honesty guarantee ever invented.
