The claim

There are 47,000+ listed AI tools, and the number is the problem, not the point. A one-to-ten-person company staffs about 20 jobs — a reasoning core, a builder, a deploy path, a memory, a channel it owns, books that close, and a dozen more. Tools churn weekly (276 of our tracked 1174 field entries are already dead, renamed, or absorbed); the jobs don't. So we map the jobs, seat the best current holders on each, and version the whole thing quarterly like the reference it has to be.

Why elements, not tools

Every tool list rots the day it publishes. An element framework rots slower because it's built on the stable layer: "Support Agent" outlives whichever vendor holds it this quarter. The table is deliberately bounded at 58 seats — scarcity forces the judgment that 47,000-item directories refuse to make — and every element carries its phase, price band, and an essential mark that varies by stage. Twenty-eight elements are marked essential; nobody needs all of them on day one.
